Student Voice: A Semester of Discovery in Akita

Olaf Wilczynski, Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences, Switzerland is participating in our exchange program for Fall 2025. We would like to introduce his experience at AIU.

My time at AIU has been filled with many memorable experiences, both big and small, that have shaped my daily life in Akita. One of my favorite things about being here is the easy access to nature. Whether it’s taking a walk around campus, sitting in front of the library, or relaxing around Tsubaki and Sakura Student Apartments, the calm atmosphere always helps me reset. On days when I want something a little livelier, I enjoy heading to AEON shopping mall or Akita City with friends. Even just wandering around, trying snacks, or browsing shops feels relaxing after a long week.

The organized bus tours to various places have also been incredible experiences. I got to visit so many places I had never even heard of before, such as the Oga Peninsula (a scenic coastal area known for its dramatic cliffs, ocean views, and the traditional Namahage folklore), Kakunodate (a historic town famous for its samurai residences and beautiful streets lined with cherry trees) , and Moriyoshi (a nature-rich mountain area known for hiking and its famous winter “snow monsters,” the frost-covered trees). The wilderness, forests, and scenic lookouts were breathtaking.

Another experience I’ve really enjoyed is going to the gym near campus. It has become part of my routine—not only for staying healthy, but also for clearing my mind. The walk there and back is very soothing, even if the weather doesn’t always cooperate. The gym is a place where I can take a break from studying and challenge myself in a different way.

Food-wise, my favorite discovery in Akita has definitely been conveyor belt sushi. We don’t have it back in Switzerland, so having it not too far from the mall makes life a bit more fun.

My favorite class at AIU has to be Creative Writing. It’s not something I’m particularly strong at, but it’s really fun to try the methods we discuss in class—sometimes with more success than at other times. I can only recommend it (the teacher is great too—hats off to them).

Living on campus has been convenient and cozy. Being able to walk everywhere—classrooms, the library, the gym—makes life simple, and running into friends throughout the day gives the campus a real sense of community. My daily routine usually includes classes, study time at the library, a workout at the gym, and a nice, warm meal at the end of the day. Whether it’s at the cafeteria or the campus café, all the food is amazing.
