Student Voice: My first month in Akita – Kamilla Wittrup SCHMIDT, Aalborg University, Denmark

Kamilla Wittrup SCHMIDT, Aalborg University, Denmark is participating in our exchange program for the Fall 2023 semester. We would like to introduce her experience at AIU.

Senshu Park in Akita City

Almost a month has passed since I’ve arrived at AIU. These few weeks have been filled with many different, wild, and fantastic experiences. These experiences have centered around not only the beautiful surroundings of my study life here on campus, but also due to the many people and friends I have come to know so far.

One of the things I want to highlight about studying at AIU is the structure of the living facilities. I really enjoy the opportunity my student life in the residences gives me to be a part of an environment with such a large diversity of personalities and cultures all gathered and living in one place. Not only can I soak up a lot of new knowledge and insights, I can also share my own cultural values and norms with others.

I think these intercultural interactions are what shape people the most into getting inspired and cause them to view their own personality from another perspective. To me, a big part of studying abroad is not only gaining new academic knowledge, but also expanding my network and personal horizon. I think AIU has so far proven to be a very good place to pursue that wish.

Moreover, AIU is in a very special location in Akita prefecture. I particularly enjoy the wildlife around campus and the landscapes the prefecture has to offer.

Coming from Denmark, mountains are very unusual to me, and the change of scenery is simply stunning.

Aside from the local area, Akita has some special tourist attractions, such as Onsens (hot spring baths) and many festivals, which I intend to experience further during my stay here.
